Domaine de la Vougeraie: 2001 Vougeot 1er Cru "Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot" Monopole [shelf talker]

The Wine News — 4/1/2005
Score: 98 Points

(This rare white Burgundy has been produced for 900 years from a triangular vineyard near Clos de Vougeot.) The bouquet and palate fuse mineral, dried fruit and nutty flavors in a holy association. The vineyard's neighbors are Clos de Vougeot, Musigny, and Les Amoureuses. As great a white wine as you'll find - outstanding, astounding, exceptional and worth the price.

So smooth, so silky, so delicious. Full-bodied white Burgundy, yet refined and elegant, with mineral and toasted notes, but whats stands out is the vey ripe, sweet fruit. It's vinified dry, of course, but it still tastes like a nice fruit dessert. Drink now through 2010.

This tiny 5.6 acre white vineyard in the heart of the red wine village of Vougeot is owned entirely by Boisset family's Domaine de la Vougeraie. This wine is deliciously ripe and open, with spice and nutmeg. There is a balancing touch of acidity, and sweet, almost tropical fruit. Smoky, spicy aftertaste.

A complex, powerful white, reminiscent of Corton-Charlemagne, with a mineral element focusing the nut and citrus tones. Has ample weight and a lively structure keeping it balanced and fresh through the long finish.

A rich, spicy, new wood-flavored wine from a unique parcel of white grapes next to the famed Clos de Vougeot. The wine is big, rich and densely flavored, packed with fresh apricots, and finishes with a hint of caramel.

A beautifully balanced Burgundy, La Vougeraie brings subtle transitions of flavor to the tongue, as richly layered as the history of the region itself. A personal favorite of Wasserman’s, he notes: “La Vougeraie is all a Burgundy should be.”

"Ripe and juicy, exhibiting floral, apricot and candied citrus notes, all backed by a vibrant structure. The oak is a bit intrusive, with some clove accents, but time will take care of that. This has a nice toasty finish. Best from 2010 through 2013. 834 cases made." –BS

There was a change of vinification for this vintage - all to the good, I'd say. Very fine and tense and exciting. Real punch and concentration. Great smoky intensity. Very powerful. The most successful vintage I can remember. Long. Drink 2009-16.

The nose here is purer still as the oak is better integrated and much more of a background element... Round, intense, mineral-laden flavors offer excellent mid-palate punch and impressive persistence on the intense finish. Elegant, precise and extremely fine, especially for a Vougeot blanc.

Quite oaky though there is more underlying material and exellent richness though the wood presently sweetens the flavor and rounds off the finish. This has typically been a serious wine and my range offers the benefit of the doubt.

Supple and balanced, showing some lovely ripe fruit, crisp character and a mineral touch. Medium-concentrated, but the oak is well-integrated and the wine is fun to drink. Drink now through 2003.
