Bouchard Aîné & Fils: 2005 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru [shelf talker]

Wine News — 10/1/2008
Score: 95 points

Light rose petal hue. Enticing scents of violet, lavender and black cherry with secondary nuances of allspice and pepper. Exquisitely fine tannins and ripe flavors of Rainier cherry and red raspberry. Supporting acidity and layers of raspberry, vanilla and clove in the ethereal close.

Wines from Morey-Saint-Denis should be opulent in 2005, and this wine has opulence in spades. It fills the mouth with rich red plums, red cherries and some cranberry juice to give an edge of dryness. Maybe complexity is edged out by all this juicy fruit, but the tannins do firm up the wine, which should certainly age 10 years or more. Imported by Boisset Family Estates. ----Reviewed by Roger Voss

A wine from the Grand Cru Clos de la Roche in Morey-Saint-Denis, this is big, rounded, packed with cherry and balancing wood flavors. It has power and generosity. It also packs quite a firm tannin edge, which promises some good aging. Imported by Boisset Family Estates.

Bright Crystal hue. Complex scents of mineral, paraffin and lemon. Bright acidity and racy flavors of lime and white grapefruit. A touch of vanilla in the steely close.

Round and a touch creamy, this is clean and shows just enough structure to keep its butter-toast, tropical fruit and citrus personnality from getting mushy. There's plenty of oak and mineral-earth notes as well. Finishes with good length and a bit more grip than expected from the overall soft mouthfeel. Still, drink this sooner rather than later, now through 2004.

There's an element of tinned apple juice to this, though not in a pejorative way, with accents of spice and citrus. Elegant, with moderate length. Drink now through 2012. 250 cases made. –BS

Considering its youth, this is already an accessible wine, with dry tannins well underneath the black plums, acidity and freshness. It won't age much, but it is attractive and drinkable now. Imported by Boisset America.

Although this is not a premier cru, the 19-acre En Champs vineyard has a reputation for making solid, meaty wines. This fits that bill, with its dark tannins and layers of acitidy. It needs 2-3 years at least to mature. Imported by Boisset America.

This plump, chewy wine harmoniously blends smoke and toast with cherries and herbs. It may not be earth-shattering stuff, but it's not meant to be - it simply satisfies.

Lean and relatively silent as a youth, this wine should expand on its stony center as it takes on age. For now, it's tight, well composed with a gentle dusting of hazelnut and chalk around the stony fruit.

Freshly fruity initially, this wine slowly reveals some tight and firm tannins that go deep into the rich plum and spice flavors. It is structured as well as fleshy, a balanced wine that finishes with bright acidity.

Panelists saw a very pale, celar, hay-colored whwite with sme obvious viscosity. Aromas were of tropical fruits including pineapple, banana and coconut with hints of toast and floral tones. Taste showed lemon, banana, and other tropical fruilts with a slightly vegetal note. This medium-bodied wine had a lingering finish of pepper with more citrus and tree fruits.

At first, this shows the character of its oak in layers of spice, the fruit so austere and unforgiving it takes time for it to gather air and show juicy pear along with the maple sap and other wood flavors that slowly yield. The wine lengthens with time in the glass and could improve markedly with another two to three years in the bottle.
