Oceana is crafted from grapes grown in Monterey County, a perfect terroir for growing aromatic Riesling grapes. The primary attribute of this singular terroir is the cooling air of the Monterey Bay, which creates a long growing season. As air in the southern part of the county warms at noon each day and rises, cool air from the Bay fills the void left by the rising warm air. Monterey County’s ideal climate also provides warm days for complete grape ripening and a low risk of frost or unseasonable and damaging rains. Due to the lack of abundant rainfall, drip irrigation is used to give the vines just enough water to develop perfectly healthy grapes and to withhold water in order to concentrate flavors in the grapes. Grapevines in Monterey County tend to produce buds in the Spring, two weeks earlier than vines in other regions and due to the cool growing season, the Fall harvest typically begins two weeks later than other regions. Thus, local grapes remain on the vine a full month longer, developing the characteristic intensity of flavor and as ideal sugar/acid balance. Concentrated, true varietal flavors are the hallmark of Monterey County's quality wines.

Tasting Notes

Winemaking:
Our 2007 Riesling was slowly cold-fermented in stainless steel tanks to retain all its varietal character and preserve a fresh, fruity style.

Nose:
This dry-styled Riesling, reminiscent of Alsace, offers enticing, fragrant aromas of ripe fig and peaches accented by hints of citrus and lovely honeysuckle.

Palate:
On the graceful palate, the wine’s bright key lime pie and peach flavors are heightened by a refreshing minerality that lingers through the crisp finish.

Food Pairing:
Riesling is a wonderful apéritif wine which also pairs beautifully with crab, pork, lean fish and turkey entrées, as well as spicy Asian and Mexican cuisine.
